“King of Carrot Flowers” + “Dark Fantasy” Mash up

When I first saw this on my feed I was disappointed of what I considered an appropriation of really awesome indie music by Kanye West and the mainstream industry.

Not to say that I don’t think that Kanye West it talented.  But honestly, how do you compare songs like “Gold Digger” (etc, etc) to songs on an entire album that was inspired by Anne Frank and her family (Aeroplane Over the Sea —by Neutral Milk Hotel)?

You don’t.

Nevertheless, this a pretty good mash-up.

So, proceed with caution?

Enjoy!

From Wikipedia:

It is largely inspired by the story of holocaust victim Anne Frank. During live performances, including the one released under the title Live at Jittery Joe’s, Mangum has described some of the songs off this album as based on urgent, recurring dreams he had of a Jewish family during World War II.

What.

I’m not Kanye’s biggest fan ever and of course I recognize the misogyny that goes into his music (but I also think almost all music by men have that going on), but I’m not sure why this guy’s fantasies of the Holocaust has more legitimacy than, say, Kanye West’s music about black-on-black violence in the U.S.

oh, hell no

Kanye West is a talented and amazing lyricist. Listen to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, or hell, any of his albums in their entirety; don’t pigeonhole his entire work based on what the radio pushes on us, because let me tell you, the music industry is run by white people and you are not going to hear a mainstream rap song that talks about social issues and the oppression of black people. That might alienate suburban white kids!

And if you do, it will most likely become some ironic hipster cliche, like what happened with Jay-Z’s “99 Problems,” a song about racial profiling. So if you want to talk about appropriation, maybe we can start there instead.

Now, not everything Kanye pens is a beautiful gem of the utmost poignancy (looking @ u, verse on “E.T.”) but neither is Jeff Mangum’s shit. “Semen stains the mountain tops,” anyone? I happen to like NMH, mostly for the imagery and wordplay Mangum manages to create, but he’s written plenty of shit that just falls flat.

And while I don’t approve of Holocaust comparisons, at least what Kanye is talking about is the systematic oppression of black people in America, as opposed to some white dude’s whimsical fantasy of being haunted by the ghost of Anne Frank (which tbh is pretty gross).

automatically writing off a black artist you have clearly never really listened to in favor of championing masturbatory white hipster bullshit (dreams, y’all!) and calling this appropriation? So Tumblr.

How do you compare Aeroplane and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy? How about that they’re both Pitchfork 10.0s?

When fucking Pitchfork is doing better at you at giving albums by people who aren’t yelpy chalky twentysomethings a chance, you need to revaluate your thoughts on everything.

I like that defending Kanye’s music seems to automatically translate to insulting Jeff Magnum’s. They’re both great albums. They’re also completely different in almost every conceivable way.

“Some guy’s Holocaust fantasy” really? Are you really going to go there?

Anyway, this is a neat mix. Check it out.
